Katharina Megli

Cambridge Singing Teacher    Opera & Performance Coach    Choral Director

After completing a Bachelor of Music with distinction at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, I toured as a soloist with the Edmonton and Calgary Opera Associations’ ‘Opera in Schools’ programme. Following two years at the Mozarteum Sommerakademie in Salzburg, where students were given daily opportunities to work with international singing coaches, I sang my first professional role with the Edmonton Opera Association.

Further roles followed with the Calgary, Winnipeg and Vancouver Opera Companies. Chosen along with seven other young singers from across Canada to join the Canadian Opera Company’s young artists’ programme in Toronto, I sang mezzo-soprano roles  in touring and main-stage productions. I have performed as a soloist in the Stratford Festival and with the Symphony Orchestras of Edmonton, Toronto and Chicago. I performed the title role of Carmen in Peter Brook’s acclaimed Broadway production at the Vivien Beaumont Theatre, Lincoln Centre, New York.

After moving to the UK, I obtained an MA in History and an MPhil in the History of Political Thought from the University of Cambridge where I started the first student choir at Lucy Cavendish College.  During my time as Director, this open-to-all student choir was invited by the President to perform at private dinners and larger college events.  Finding that I enjoyed directing and inspiring singers, I continued to work with community choirs after my graduation. I also began to teach singing, first at St John’s College School and then in my own private practice. In 2008 I founded a new, auditioned choir at Lucy Cavendish College: the Lucy Cavendish Singers.
